Initial Plans for New Museum
Board with Perkins+Will Architects
Update - Fall 2017
Since Perkins & Will has completed the working drawings for the renovation, the plans have been submitted to Miami Dade County Planning Department for DERM and Fire approval. We hope to see construction commence in the following months.
Museum Progress Update
Although the Museum is closed during the renovation of our new home at 501 East Drive, it doesn’t mean work isn’t taking place. Through a grant from the American Institute of Architect’s 1% Program (http://theonepercent.org/), we are receiving help from the architectural firm of Perkins + Will (http://www.perkinswill.com ). . Gia Zapatini and Armando Rigau, Associates with P+W, are assisting with planning, permitting, and development of the drawings required for transforming 501 East Drive into a museum for the Society. Most recently the architects and our Board met with Skip Reid at City Hall. We will be keeping you updated as we continue to make progress.
The Society has also received another grant from the Museum Assessment Program (http://aam-us.org/resources/assessment-programs/MAP). Through a one-year process of self-assessment, institutional activities and consultative peer review, the MSHS will emerge with an analysis of its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities and a prioritized roadmap for improving operations and meeting standards. MAP is supported through a cooperative agreement between the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Alliance of Museums (Washington, DC).
In addition to helping us make the Society a stronger organization, both of these awards will assist us in applying for additional grants and support.
